The Full Moon and the Lycan Transformation

Every werewolf story circles back to the same silver light. When the moon swells full over the treeline, something old wakes up in the blood of the cursed, and the man starts to vanish. But why the moon? And what really happens in that awful moment when the change takes him?

Why the Moon Holds Power

People have tied the full moon to madness for as long as they have watched the sky. The word "lunatic" comes straight from luna, the moon. The old stories say moonlight wakes the beast sleeping inside a Lycan and drags it to the surface, willing or not. Some tales pin it to the single fullest night. Others say the pull builds for days on either side, with the beast straining against its cage the whole time.

The Change Itself

The legends describe the change as agony and thrill rolled together. Bones stretch and reset. Fur pushes up through the skin. Every sense flares to a painful sharpness, so a single scent or heartbeat or twig snapping in the dark suddenly drowns out everything else. The man's thoughts pull back, and the wolf's hunger takes over. For a few hours there is no reason left. Only instinct.

Master or Slave to the Beast?

Not every Lycan is helpless once the moon comes up. In a lot of traditions, an experienced werewolf learns to keep hold of its mind through the change, riding the beast instead of getting ridden by it. Those are the ones to worry about, a wolf's body run by a human's cunning. Younger Lycans, still new to all of it, are the ones who wake up miles from home with no idea what they did.

After the Dawn

When the sun comes up, the beast pulls back. The Lycan returns to human shape, usually worn out, sometimes bleeding, always a little more marked by whatever happened. And they know the moon is coming back around.
